Bio-Shell® bioreactors
Upgrade your wastewater ponds at a cost that you can afford. Bio-Shell® bioreactors can extend pond service life for years at a fraction of the cost of alternative technologies.
Developed by University of Utah professors, Kraig Johnson and Larry Reaveley, Bio-Shell®bioreactors’ and Bio-Dome®bioreactors’ award-winning, patented technology consists of concentrically nested shells or domes that are infused with air from the bottom. They sit on the floor of a pond and are completely submerged. Bio-Shell®bioreactors and Bio-Dome®bioreactors are shaped as half cylinders and spheres respectively with key shape modifications to enhance efficiency. Bio-Shell®bioreactors are suitable for pond depths of 1.2m and above with Bio-Dome®bioreactors requiring pond depths of > 2m.
As water flows through the bioreactors from bottom-to-top, beneficial bacteria (bio-films) effectively reduce ammonia-nitrogen, BOD and TSS in wastewater. Unlike other systems, the growth of the naturally occurring bio-films is maximised by the way in which oxygen is optimally guided through the bioreactors by their geometry.
Because the Bio-Shell®bioreactors rely on fixed film, as opposed to suspended growth, they provide reliable nitrification in water temperatures as low as 0.5 ̊C, however nitrification performance varies greatly depending upon temperature. In the future, as the community grows and loading is increased, additional Bio-Shell®bioreactors can be installed incrementally as required in order to ensure compliance.

Microfiltration
Microfiltration is a process that uses a porous membrane to remove suspended solids and microorganisms from water. Microfiltration membranes act much like a very fine sieve to retain particulate matter, while water and its soluble components pass through the membrane as filtrate, or filtered water. The retained solids are concentrated in a waste stream that is discharged from the membrane system. The pore size of the membrane and the integrity of the sealing mechanism controls the fraction of the particulate matter that is removed.
Since 2007 Marshall Projects has partnered with Pall to deliver twelve drinking water and two wastewater treatment plants in New Zealand. These projects have all utilised Pall Aria™ microfiltration systems ranging in capacity from 150 to 30,000 m³/day. Both companies have committed to long-term involvement in the water and wastewater industries in New Zealand.
Pall Corporation is the world’s largest supplier of filters, filter systems and fluid purification equipment. Pall Water supplies hollow fibre membrane filtration systems and services that are specifically designed to meet the requirements of each project.
Pall Aria™ microfiltration systems are used to filter ground and surface waters for drinking water and industrial use and secondary effluent for reuse.
Marshall Projects is the system integrator and installer responsible for the management of the design, procurement and installation of all supporting infrastructure including the installation of the plant, interconnecting pipework, electrical and any off-skid instrumentation.
